It’s been eight years since the Colorado Rockies have been in the postseason, but the near decade-long drought ends tonight. The Rockies will face the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.
The Diamondbacks are starting their ace, Zack Greinke. This will be the fifth season Greinke has appeared in the playoffs. He appeared for Milwaukee in 2011 and the Dodgers in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Greinke is coming off of an excellent year for the D-backs. He posted a 3.20 ERA (149 ERA+) in 2021⁄3 innings. Facing Greinke will be an imposing task for the Rockies, but the Diamondbacks also have a few heavies on offense—namely, MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt, the JD Martinez, and AJ Pollock.
Jon Gray, the Rockies’ ace, will start for Colorado. It will be his first ever postseason appearance. Gray missed most of the first three months of the season with a foot injury, but he’s had an excellent year in about a half-season of work. Gray had a 3.67 ERA (137 ERA+) in 110 1⁄3 innings. The Diamondbacks have one MPV candidate on offense, but the Rockies have two. Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon are both coming off of fantastic seasons, and both will see the first postseason action of their careers.
The winner of tonight’s game will continue on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. That series starts on Friday, October 6, in LA.
