NCAA Basketball Tournament 2016: Thursday Schedule

The First Four games are over, and the real first round of the NCAA Tournament can finally begin. 32 teams across the country will start their 2016 tournament runs on Thursday, but only half of them will live to play again on Saturday.

Three of the four No. 1 seeds will get started on Thursday. Virginia, Kansas, and North Carolina should all dispatch their opponents with little trouble, but there are intriguing games up and down the schedule. Perrenial tournament force UConn is only a No. 9 seed this year, but they're coming off a conference tournament win and will play No. 8 Colorado in the first round. The winner of that will go on to face Kansas, barring the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history on the part of Austin Peay.

College basketball bluebloods Kentucky, Arizona, and Indiana are all in action as well, but won't be able to go through the motions and expect to breeze into the second round. Arizona has to take care of business against a tough Wichita State team, and Indiana has a very lively Chattanooga team on their plate that went 29-5 this year. Stony Brook won the America East and went 26-6 this year, but has a tall order ahead of them in a Kentucky team that appears to be pretty grumpy about being slotted in as a No. 4 seed.

2014 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament

WKU plays its first football game tonight as a member of Conference USA and will face its first league opponent in two weeks when the Hilltoppers travel to Middle Tennessee to face the Blue Raiders on Sept. 13 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

"I think it is a quality conference and we are excited to be in it,” said head coach Jeff Brohm. “I think it will bring a lot of energy to our fans to play news teams, to experience going to different places. I think we fit in just great. Our players are excited to play in it. We are going to go out and compete. Without question, our goal is to go out and win the conference championship."

Winning conference championships and enjoying postseason success is the norm at WKU. Since 2000, WKU Athletics has won more than 80 conference championships, graduated more than 85 percent of its student-athletes and invested more than $100 million in new construction or renovations of athletic facilities. Additionally, the men's basketball program ranks 18th in NCAA history for wins, women's basketball has appeared in three NCAA Final Fours and the school has boasted more than 70 football All-Americans.

The move to a new league doesn’t change the goals exhibited by the entire athletic department as the WKU Football program has its eyes on a league title in the future. “Every year we want to come out as a team and a program to win a conference championship,” said Brohm. “That will be a goal of ours, no question. We will work hard to do that. I'm excited to be in Conference USA. It's a challenge, a lot of new teams but we are ready to take on that challenge. Our players are ready and eager to get to work.

The new platform also gives WKU the chance to improve its stature on a national platform.

“As we progress, we want to make this a program on the national level, make it high profile,” said Brohm. “You do that by playing exciting football, by being dominant on both sides of the ball and special teams and showing enthusiasm for your work. We will definitely do that.”
