The USMNT will play their second game under the second reign of Bruce Arena this Friday, February 3, 2017 (4:00 PM Pacific) when they face Jamaica at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee for an International Friendly match. The Americans are coming from a disappointing 0-0 draw against the Serbian National team at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Serbia utilized a core of domestic league players with only two players exceeding the age of 25 against Bruce Arena’s side. The US players were not clinical with their opportunities and several players like Jermaine Jones felt the ware of not playing in a competitive match in months. Bruce Arena will be without Jermaine Jones or Sacha Kljestan for this match which could make way for more inexperienced players to crack the starting 11.

It was also mentioned that Santos Laguna’s Jorge Villafana could be starting for Bruce Arena on Friday in Chattanooga. The standout player for Arena in their match against Serbia was Liberian-born, Darlington Nagbe. The Portland Timbers midfielder was easily the best player on the pitch for Bruce Arena as he contributed to nearly every scoring opportunity the USMNT had. Coming into this game at the Finley Stadium he will be the main player to watch as his rapid pace and good distribution of the ball could lead to several goals for the American-side.

Jamaica are already mathematically knocked out of World Cup qualifying for the 2018 competition. They will also be without their main players who militate in European clubs for the match, with their main core of players coming from the MLS. Players like Andre Blake, Oneil Fisher, Omar Holness, Kemar Lawrence, Alvas Powell, Je-Vaughn Watson and Romario Williams will be the core of the Caribbean side.

The last match the USMNT played against Jamaica resulted in a shocking 2-1 victory for the islanders in the semi-finals of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The game should serve as good preparation for Bruce Arena’s side for future World Cup qualifying matches against CONCACAF opponents. The USMNT should be the dominant team in this match, but they will not be if they play the same as they did against Serbia.

International Soccer Friendly : Scotland vs England

Rivals Scotland and England are set to face each other this Tuesday in a friendly at Celtic Park, Glasgow. This will be the first time since 1999 that the England squad will visit Scotland, and the match is set to be a close one.

 

Out of 112 games played between the two sides, there have been 24 draws, 46 English wins and 41 Scottish victories. Both teams also have won their last matches, Scotland with a 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland and England triumphing 3-1 over Slovenia.

 

This match falls two months after the Scottish public vote, where Scotland decided against their country’s independence, away from the United Kingdom. Former England captain, Terry Butcher says that "I think that this will be, without a shadow of a doubt, the most hostile environment England will face before they get to Euro 2016." Although it is only a friendly between the rivals the atmosphere will be tense.

 

This will be England’s last match in 2014. The England squad includes Danny Welbeck, who has scored five goals in the past four games, as well as captain Wayne Rooney, who has currently scored 44 goals for England. Rooney gave some words of encouragement to his younger team-mates about the atmosphere, and warned that it ‘is going to be hostile’. The Scottish team under Gordon Strachan is also in form. This match between the ‘auld enemies’ is going to be one to watch.

Scotland

Scotland are making great strides of progress under Gordon Strachan. They sit third in Euro 2016 qualifying in Group D, level on points with Germany and three behind leaders Poland.

 

They operate out of a base 4-2-3-1 formation but remain very fluid and adaptable. Gone are the days where Craig Levein fielded a 4-6-0—the Tartan Army are rehabilitating their own footballing image via good football and excellent coaching.

 

They remain stubborn at the back but utilise speed and interchange of players up top. Germany and Poland badly underestimated the Scots, and Roy Hodgson will be eager to avoid making the same mistake.

 

England

England were atrocious for 57 minutes against Slovenia. Jordan Henderson's shock own goal acted as a relative defibrillator to their game plan, transforming it from slow and monotonous to quick and purposeful.

Hodgson has now played the 4-4-2 diamond in five matches, and here are the main takeaways:

Raheem Sterling is the No. 10 of choice, with Adam Lallana working his way into the rotation wherever possible.

International Soccer Friendly : Argentina vs Portugal

Portugal vs. Argentina is perhaps the glamour international friendly of 2014 due to the presence of maestros Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

 

But both managers will take the event seriously as they prepare for their respective upcoming tests. Fernando Santos' Portugal are still developing under a new regime, and Argentina are less than a year away from the 2015 Copa America.

 

Let's take a tactical look at how these teams are progressing.

 

Portugal

Portugal have started carefully and slowly under Fernando Santos, adjusting to a very different life than the one experienced under Paulo Bento. Santos has spread his net and tried all sorts of options and players, refusing to single in on "favourites" as his predecessor did.

 

That's resulted in recalls for the likes of Tiago and Jose Bosingwa, while Cedric Soares and Raphael Guerreiro have also entered the picture. There's a fresh feel about the squad, even if the results are trickling in.

 

Santos is still finding his feet systemically, but after Bento's home loss to Albania, the former Greece manager has won both his competitive games. He's showing flexibility; he played a diamond against Denmark and a loose 4-4-2 against Armenia, and both formations have been rather fluid.

 

As he continues to assess his options, it's tough to judge how they'll set up, but you can bet the formation will place key players Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho and Danny in a place to succeed.

 

Argentina

Gerardo Martino, also fairly fresh from taking the reins with Argentina post-World Cup, will continue his push to get Messi on the ball in dangerous areas as often as possible.

 

Los Albiceleste play a 4-3-3 under Martino, but it's no longer modelled on the Barcelona system of 2011 with Messi up front. Instead, Messi plays from the right, and a true No. 9 takes the central berth.

 

They have an embarrassment of riches to take up that central position—Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez represent three world-class options—and Angel Di Maria now looks to be settling into a role on the left wing, not in central midfield.

 

The central trio work hard and provide cover for the roaming full-backs, and it's noticeable Martino is assessing alternate options at left-back for the injured Marcos Rojo.

International Soccer Friendly : Germany vs Spain

Joachim Low's Germany will be up against it on Tuesday when they make the trip to Spain to feature in a showdown between the current and former world champions.

 

Although no more than a glamour friendly, Die Mannschaft will be hoping to make the most of the fixture in order to regain the form that took them all the way in Brazil earlier this year.

 

Following a horrendous start to their qualifying group and a somewhat lackadaisical 4-0 win over Gibraltar on Friday night, the pressure is now on Low and Germany to start performing like champions.

 

Vicente del Bosque's side have enjoyed success against Germany over the past few years, winning each of the last three encounters between the two sides. But Tuesday's match truly could go either way.

 

Germany will go into this tricky tie with a somewhat irregular back line, following a number of injuries to first-choice players.

 

The most notable of these is Manuel Neuer, who picked up a knee injury following the match against Gibraltar on Saturday. First-choice central defender Jerome Boateng also joins Mats Hummels on the injury list.

 

This will then likely lead to Low sticking with experienced defender Benedikt Howedes alongside recent call-up Robin Knoche in the centre of his defence. The Wolfsburg central defender has been outstanding in the Bundesliga this season and should expect to start.

 

Elsewhere in defence, we should see Dortmund left-back Erik Durm keep his spot on the left while Stuttgart's Antonio Rudiger comes in on the right, although Shkodran Mustafi and Jonas Hector are also available for selection on either wing.

 

Germany will look somewhat more assured in midfield on Tuesday, despite having similar injury troubles in the position as they do in defence.

 

Gladbach star Christoph Kramer was ruled out with injury ahead of the Gibraltar game, meaning Real Madrid duo Sami Khedira and Toni Kroos partnered up for the clash. That is likely to remain the case against Spain, with Bayern Munich playmaker Mario Gotze keeping his role as No. 10 for Low's side.

 

Lars Bender and Sebastian Rudy are the only other central midfielders in Low's squad as things stand, meaning Khedira may find himself replaced before too long. However, no natural replacement for Kroos looks likely at the moment.

International Soccer Friendly : Republic of Ireland vs United States

The Aviva Stadium in Dublin will be the venue for the United States and the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday. The Republic of Ireland come into this game off the back of a loss to Scotland on Friday night. A tough loss for the team as they played a very good game with the Scots and if they truth be known the spoils probably should have been split between the two.

 

Martin O'Neill will be looking to get a bounce back from his side on Tuesday as the Irish look for a pick me up after losing to Scotland. The United States will be a tough game for Ireland,although the way the bookmakers have it priced it looks like they think Ireland win this one eay.

Jurgen Klinsmann has brought a full strength squad to Europe for these friendlies and with his side losing to Colombia last week he will want a performance from his team on Tuesday night. Jose Altidore, Wodolowski , Bekerman and Green will be looking to get themselves involved against a strong Irish team. More than likely Klinsmann gives a couple of his fringe players some game time in Dublin but I do expect a ful strength USA team to start the game.

 

The duo received their first Republic of Ireland call-ups last week.
Robbie Keane and Darron Gibson will miss the friendly after featuring in Friday's defeat by Scotland in Glasgow.

Republic boss Martin O'Neill is expected to field a much-changed team from the Euro 2016 qualifier.
However, O'Neill gave little way about the precise composition of his team on Monday beyond confirming that Christie and McGoldrick would make their debuts.

Both are eligible to play for the Republic because they have Irish grandparents.
Nottingham-born McGoldrick, who was adopted, discovered his Irish heritage after researching his ancestors.

 

McGoldrick, 26, has formed an attacking partnership at Ipswich with another Republic striker Daryl Murphy while full-back Christie, 22, has impressed during his 18 appearances for the Rams this season.

Asked whether his priority was the performance or the result in Tuesday's game, O'Neill said: "Both. I'd like to see how a few of the players are going to cope with this type of game but I'd also like to get back to winning."

LA Galaxy striker Keane and US players Jermaine Jones, Lee Nguyen, DeAndre Yedlin and DaMarcus Beasley have been excused from the friendly because of the MLS play-offs commitments next weekend.

Keane will be action for LA Galaxy against Seattle Sounders, while Everton midfielder Gibson has returned to Merseyside for treatment to a minor knee problem.
The USA lost 2-1 to Colombia in London on Friday, a third game without a win since the summer's World Cup following draws with Ecuador and Honduras.

"Many players are struggling to get back into shape after the World Cup, especially the European players," said manager Jurgen Klinsmann.
"It takes a lot out of you. The World Cup is a huge deal. It's a two-month, high-intensity camp that you go through. It's understandable.

"And that's why we conceded a goal two minutes from the end, against Honduras and Colombia."
The USA progressed to the second round at the World Cup in Brazil where they lost 2-1 to Belgium after extra-time.
